The policy is supported. It ensures that development contributes to the wider nature recovery network by integrating BNG and ecological connectivity into development. It provides certainty for developers while supporting long-term environmental sustainability through the protection and enhancement of existing green infrastructure.

The draft LNRS is at the early stages of consultation, it is therefore not clear on what the strategy will contain. This policy should be based on the outcome of this consultation to ensure that the policy is properly informed.

There is no target mentioned in the wording only that the Councils expect to support the principles. A target of 30% by 2030 needs to be included.

Support. As the LNRS is a statutory requirement this is non-negotiable. However LNRS for the Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull is still in preparation. The next iteration of the draft of the plan should take account of the emerging strategy and ensure that its provisions are hard-wired into the plan. This draft policy direction should also build on the WDC Biodiversity Action Programme and the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust Strategy (https://www.warwickshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/sites/default/files/2022-08/WWT%20Strategy%202030_final.pdf

I agree with the approach laid out in Draft Policy Direction-37, which emphasizes the importance of supporting the principles of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) to enhance biodiversity and ecological networks. This policy's focus on habitat creation, protection, and restoration aligns with the broader objectives of improving biodiversity across South Warwickshire. However, any development proposals, including those in areas like SG04, should be carefully evaluated to ensure they contribute positively to the regional nature recovery network. It is crucial that development supports long-term ecological resilience and integrates with the priorities set out in the LNRS.

The policy says ‘expected to support the principles’ of the LNRS. The policy needs to be far more explicit and state development proposals will support the principles of the LNRS, creating a Nature Recovery Network which is bigger, better and more connected as per the Lawton Review. If the Councils’ intend to reach 30% of land dedicated to nature and in recovery by 2030, as stated in the Environment Act 2021, genuine, robust and ambitious targets must be set.

Draft Policy Direction 37 supports biodiversity enhancements and green infrastructure integration in new developments, aligning with nature recovery goals. However, without a South Warwickshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS), the policy should remain flexible to ensure feasibility and viability. At Cophams Hill, this approach can enhance existing habitats while balancing ecological benefits with development deliverability.

Wildlife is suffering in South Warwickshire and is not prioritised. The policy is based on very woolly words "will be expected to support the principles ..." gives me no confidence that the plan will meaningfully protect and improve habitats for nature. I believe the councils are committed to 30% of land being dedicated to nature (as stated in the environment act of 2021) - this policy is not strong enough to deliver on that commitment.
