Do you agree that the Council has identified all reasonable options for the Historic Environment?

Representation ID: 2515

Received: 09/09/2009

Respondent: British Waterways

Representation Summary:

Historic canals not are included within Conservation Areas in Warwick District. This key industrial heritage is an integral part of the landscape within the countryside surrounding villages and towns. Kingswood Junction/Lapworth locks and the Hatton Lock flight are renown features of the canal system.

WDC should consider the possibility of conservation area designation for the South Stratford and Grand Union Canals with other LPAs. The intrinsic value of the canal and its historic buildings are irreplaceable assets. Careful conservation management of the canals will ensure the preservation of historic buildings, structures and textures and control development along the corridor.

BW is please to see the reference to the canal within paragraph 12.2 as green corridors. PPS12 identified canals as part of the green infrastructure, which needs to be funded and developed to support development providing sustainable transport routes.
The canal infrastructure can contribute to new waterside developments to cater for healthier and active living by encouraging walking and cycling via use of the canal and adjacent leisure facilities.

Developer contributions from waterside developments can be secured to improve canal corridors, increase walking and cycling opportunities within the canal network, improvements and transport initiatives and create a link between town and country.
