Local Plan Main Modifications 2017

Representation ID: 70404

Received: 26/04/2017

Respondent: Myton School

Representation Summary:

Myton School ("MS") opposes the proposed amendment "This allocation (ED1) will provide for a new secondary and sixth form facility".
The 7.12 hectares of educational land was originally negotiated to expand MS and NOT to build a third secondary school adjacent to MS in the middle of its priority area.
The proposal is not sound because:
a) The location of the new school will have a detrimental impact on Myton School and its local community
b) 1,000 secondary school is not financially viable
c) Neither the new school nor MS will be able to be expanded in the future.

Ref 2.57 Myton Area - the allocation of land for educational purposes (ED1) was located directly to the south of Myton School's current site to enable Myton School to work with Warwickshire County Council to expand and help meet some of the increase in secondary and sixth form places resulting from the Local Plan housing developments. This education land was never negotiated by way of the s106 agreement to locate a new secondary school. The allocated land (ED1) specifically for the secondary / sixth form is only 7.12 hectares which would only cater for approx 1,000 additional secondary students (including 6th form) - using BB103 guidelines. Such a size of secondary school is not considered financially viable under DfE guidelines and significantly restricts the ability to expand provision within the local area in the future.

In addition, positioning a new secondary school so close to the current educational provision (i.e adjacent) could be severely detrimental to the on-going viability and success of Myton School. Myton School remains committed to fully inclusive education at the heart of the community it serves and a proposed new school adjacent to Myton School could compromise the delivery of this also.

Myton School therefore believes the modification "This allocation (ED1) will provide for a new secondary and sixth form facility" is not sound. Myton School remains committed to working with Warwickshire County Council to help identify the best educational solution for the local area. Myton School recognizes a longer term need for a 3rd secondary school (in addition to Myton School and Campion School) to serve the local area but considers locating a new secondary school directly adjacent to an existing secondary school as unsound due to
a) The location of the new school will have a detrimental impact on Myton School and its local community
b) a 1,000 student secondary / sixth form is not financially viable
c) Neither the new school (due to being built on only 7 hectares) nor Myton School will be able to be expanded in the future thus significantly restricting educational expansion solutions in the near future.
