The use of active travel routes must give consideration of the distances involved, the geography of the area (are there lots of hills, places to cross rivers safely alongside existing road traffic) and the provision of adequate storage and showering facilities at workplaces if located at great distance from where people live. The routes outside of urban areas all require adequate streetlighting, gritting, street cleaning to remove debris, and segregation from other road traffic including buses.
