Land to the East of Spernal Lane and Appleby Close (refid 650)
Speeding Traffic - The entrance is very narrow, in an area where there are already several other access points to Spernal Lane from residential roads. Community Speed Watch sessions have shown that vehicles are often exceeding the 30mph speed limit which comes into force only approximately 150 metres further to the north. The site entrance is directly opposite the Grade 1 listed village pub, The Mother Huffcap, and is very close to the junction with the B4089 where there have been nearby traffic accidents recently.
Flooding- Spernal Lane often floods as water pours off several fields that run alongside it. The ditches cannot cope, so the water overflows and fills the road the whole length of the area where access would be. (See flooding photos) On the east end of the proposed development site there is the Manor Court Ditch. This is a major land drainage ditch for the village. Building on an already regularly waterlogged area would most probably exacerbate the potential for flooding. Flooding on Spernal Lane means that route of access to the village is cut off. An adopted Severn Trent Water sewer crosses the site.
Wildlife - The area surrounding Spernal Lane is full of wildlife. My particular interest is hedgehogs, which are a Red Listed species. We have many recorded hedgehog sightings in the vicinity of the proposed development. (see Big Hedgehog Map photo) Development would pose a high risk of habitat loss.
Public Rights of Way- The access point is a Public Footpath which continues along the north side of the proposed development towards the village church.
