Representation ID: 2483
Received: 09/09/2009
Respondent: British Waterways
BW is pleased to see the canal corridor mentioned within the vision. BW would welcome a move away from the green space reference to reflect its use as a multifunctional asset including sustainable transport, healthy living, recreation and tourism, setting for marina, residential and commercial development, flood and water management, heating and cooling energy management, ecology and historic sense of place.

Do you agree with the Preferred Growth Strategy for Warwick District to 2026?
Representation ID: 2484
Received: 09/09/2009
Respondent: British Waterways
The canals form a non-footloose corridor, which in the main passes through open countryside within Warwick District. It is a multifunctional asset which delivers on the growth agenda within rural areas by the positioning of small businesses within redundant canal buildings and location of off-line moorings/marinas and tourist/recreational opportunities. British Waterways would not wish to sterilise the potential for this growth within the open countryside.

Do you agree with the preferred hierarchy and strategy for each of the District's town and local centres?
Representation ID: 2487
Received: 09/09/2009
Respondent: British Waterways
Leamington Station area is ripe for new office development, which should be linked into cycling and walking routes along the towpath from Warwick and the surrounding villages to the office and retail jobs and station. The area plan should deliver the identified strategic objectives against an area action plan/site allocation for Leamington centre.
BW would wish preserve the rural nature of the Hatton Flight if so then the movement of development towards Hatton would need to be sympathetic in design, with supportive infrastructure towards Warwick Parkway and the urban centers linking into the canal towpaths for sustainable movement.

Do you agree that the Council has identified all reasonable options for Tourism?
Representation ID: 2488
Received: 09/09/2009
Respondent: British Waterways
Pleased to see reference to canal corridors in 7.2 and welcomes protection of visitor accommodation.
Reference to support boating visitors should be made through extra moorings adjacent to the canal.
As the PAN emphasises, canals are a form of strategic infrasturctue and the value and contribution of these should be recognised by the LDF.
Canals are also important through recreation and access to adjacent countryside.
Facilities need to be improved around Leamington Old town as part of the canal festival. Should be through AAP.

Do you agree that the Council has identified all reasonable options for Rural Communities?

British waterways prefer the options, which would encourage the use, improvement and access to the canal corridor. This includes redevelopment immediately adjacent to the waterway corridor utilising the canal infrastructure to meet Warwick District's development requirements.
Radford Semele, Hatton and Kingswood are close to the Grand Union Canal, North Stratford Canal and South Stratford Canal hence its inclusion within the list.
